Knights Record First Win of the Season

After a tough loss last week in South Carolina, Southern Virginia Women's Soccer travelled to play at Hollins University, and picked up the first win of the season 4-1. Led by 3 goals from freshmen, and a goal from a familiar face in Melanee Guymon, the Knights overwhelmed the hosts, taking 27 shots with 18 on frame. The Knights now sit at 1-1 on the season.

SVU played its style of game and quickly had the Hollins goalie under pressure. Shots from Taylor Osborn, Lauren Denhalter, and Amber Key came in fast as the first half went on. Kendra Heim struck for the Knights in the 16th minute as she picked up her own rebound and went around the keeper for a far post shot.

Hollins applied instant pressure, and were rewarded 15 minutes later as Colleen Tham pounced on a rebound, that goalie, Mariah Flake, was unable to get control of. The half looked to end up a tie, but Osborn was able to pounce on some great passing work from Jaylynn Rust and Heim and hit a far post shot that went over the keeper for the 2-1 halftime lead.

The second half resumed in much the same fashion as the first with SVU spraying passes all over the field and providing a constant attack on the Hollins goal. Osborn was able to add another tally in the 65th minute when another far post shot went past the keeper. Guymon rounded out the scoring in minute 77 as she overcame a crowded box to loft a shot over the keeper.

Mariah Flake recorded six saves in the contest and provided standout defense for the Knights.

"It's great to get a first win on the season," said head coach Matt Grawrock. "The game against South Carolina State was a challenge, and a tough welcome to college soccer for our team. We regrouped this week, and played a great game. The ladies accomplished a lot of things today, and this should put us on the right path for the rest of the season."

SVU will resume action on Sept. 7 as they host Columbia Union in the first ever women's soccer game on the new SVU Soccer Field. Kick off is set for 3:30 PM.
