Knights Second Day Complete at Budd Whitehill Duals

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — The Southern Virginia University wrestling team completed the second day of the Budd Whitehill Duals, falling 53-0 to SUNY-Cortland and 26-22 to Ohio Northern.

The Knights were unable to come away with a victory over SUNY-Cortland, falling in each weight class losing 53-0.

In the second match of the day, the Knights faced Ohio Northern. The Knights led early winning the first three weight classes. Ohio Northern responded with three consecutive wins in the 149, 157, and 165-pound classes, giving Ohio Northern the 18-12 lead.

Keaton Gomez defeated Connor Kwiat in the 174-pound class in a 12-4 major decision, pulling the Knights within two at 18-16.

Ohio Northern closed the match with a back-to-back win in the 184 and 197-pound class. The Knights collected the win in the 285-pound class, but Ohio Northern won 26-22.

Senior Alex Brunner victories yesterday and today place him at the top of Southern Virginia University's wrestling record book in single-season wins. Teammate Keaton Gomez previously held the record in the 2016-17 season with 22 wins. This weekend Brunner now has 23 setting the new mark while in the Division III era.

The Knights compete next at home in a dual matchup against Greensboro College Thursday, Jan. 17 at 6:30 p.m.
