WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — The Southern Virginia University wrestling team completed day one of the Budd Whitehill Duals Friday, losing 40-6 to York (Pa.), 29-26 to Williams, and 39-6 to SUNY-Oswego.
In the first round of the day, the Spartans overpowered the Knights, dropping the first six weight classes. At the 174-pound weight class, Keaton Gomez was victorious over Jordan Sciamanna in a 7-1 decision, giving the Knights their first points of the match. York (Pa.) won the next two matches at the 184 and 197-pound weight classes. In the 285-pound class, senior Alex Brunner received the win on a 3-1 decision over Thomas Tabatneck making the final score 40-6.
The Knights fell in a heartbreaker in the second round to Williams 29-26. The Knights trailed 17-0 after the first three weight classes until Ethan Workman defeated Alex Pankhurst at the 149-pound weight class. The Knights won the final four weight classes with Keaton Gomez, Matthew Rohrdanz, Matt Speelman, and Alex Brunner the victors.
In the third and final round of the day, the Knights struggled in each of their matches. The lone triumph came in the 285-pound weight class from Alex Brunner pinning Nicholas Schmitt. The final team score was 39-6 with SUNY-Oswego earning the win.
The Budd Whitehill Duals continue Saturday, Jan. 12 at Lycoming College starting at 9:00 a.m.
