WESTMINISTER, Md. — The Southern Virginia University wrestling team competed in a tri-match against the hosts McDaniel College, Wilkes University and Penn State Club, falling 40-12 against McDaniel, 35-16 against Wilkes, and earning the victory against Penn State Club 35-10.
In the match against McDaniel, the Knights had dropped each match up to the 174-pound weight class with Keaton Gomez pinning Neil Rinker in 3:39, making the score 31-6. The only other match the Knights were able to capitalize on would come in the heavyweight class with senior Alex Brunner with a pin on Chris Hauffman in 2:47, making the final score 40-12.
The next match the Knights faced Wilkes, the team would lose its first six weight classes, trailing 29-0. Southern Virginia would not give in, once again at the 174-pound class, Gomez would win by major decision over Jason DeBoard putting the Knights on the board 29-4. Matt Speelman in the 197-pound class and Brunner in the heavyweight class would both pin their opponents bringing the final score to 35-16 in favor of Wilkes.
The final matchup for the Knights was Penn State Club with the Knights putting on a good showing winning seven of the nine competing weight classes. After a pair of forfeits, Ethan Workman would win by a pin in 2:41 making the score 18-0, with Brooks Fletcher earning a hard-fought win by decision extending the lead 21-0. The Knights would lose the 165-pound class but bounce right back with major decision wins by Gomez in the 174-pound class and Matthew Rohrdanz in the 184-pound class raising the score to 39-6. The 197-pound class would go to Penn State Club and the Knights would win the heavyweight by way of forfeit for the final 35-10.
Gomez with this past weekend wins has now eclipsed the half century mark with 51 wins in his collegiate career, the most by a Knight in the Division III era.
The Knights will compete next at home in the Knight Duals Saturday, Dec. 8 at 9:00 a.m. in the Stoddard Center.
