Knights Compete in the 2018 VBR Sports Southeast Duals

SALEM, Va. — The Southern Virginia University wrestling team headed to Ferrum College to face off in the 2018 VBR Sports Southeast Duals. The Knights wrestled against four different teams, picking up one win and three losses for the tournament.

In the Knights first matchup of the day, they squared up with Huntingdon College from Montgomery, Alabama. While the team fell short, the Knights picked up a couple of good wins. Aaron Freidhof, wrestling in the 133 pound weight class was the first to win, dominating his opponent 15-5 by major decision. Matt Speelman also had a good showing for the Knights, wrestling in the 197 weight class. Speelman managed to defeat his opponent by fall only 35 seconds in, earning Southern Virginia another victory.

In their second dual of the day, the Knights faced off with the Pennsylvania College of Technology. While the team couldn't fend off the Wildcats, they again managed to win big at a couple positions, the first of these being Jayson Cody at the 141 weight division. Cody had a tough grind all the way through, but ultimately took his opponent down by fall at the 1:46 mark. The second Knight to earn a victory against the wildcats was Matthew Rohrdanz, wrestling in the 184 pound weight division, who defeated his opponent by decision 8-3.

Next up, the Knights took the mat against King's College (PA). As a team, Southern Virginia soundly defeated the Lions 24-13. In the match, three of the Knights, Jayson Cody, Matt Speelman, and Alex Brunner, all won by forfeit, giving Southern Virginia a formidable lead. Christopher Fletcher and Keaton Gomez also added big wins at the 157 and 174 weight classes. Both wrestlers won by decision, Fletcher taking out his opponent 10-7 and Gomez downing his man 6-3.

The last matchup of the day was against the Warriors of Lycoming College. Southern Virginia got swept despite some impressive efforts.

The Knights will again hit the mat on December 1st as they to head to Westminster Maryland to compete in the McDaniel Duals. The Duals are scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
