DANVILLE, Va. — At the Averett Cougar Open held on the campus of Averett University, the Southern Virginia University wrestling team had a strong showing with a second place finish from both Matt Speelman and Alex Brunner.
Aaron Freidhof started thigns off for the Knights placing sixth in the 133-pound weight bracket. Freidhof made it to the fifth/sixth place match where he ultimately fell by major decision.
Tyler Johnson also chipped in for the Knights with a solid fifth place finish for the Knights in the 174-pund weight class, Johnson's opponent would be eliminated by medical forfeit.
Representing the Knights in the 184-pound weight class was Matthew Rohrdanz managed to place fourth. Rohrdanz was really able to find his stride in the back half of the draw as he earned some solid wins before going down in the third place matchup by fall.
In the 197-pound weight class, Quigley Whitaker added a sixth place finish for the Knights in his matches of the year. He managed to win two matches before he fell to teammate Mat Speelman. Speelman went on to finish second in the division as he fell in the championship round by fall.
The Last Knight to place at the tournament was senior Alex Brunner, who was wrestling in the 285-pound weight class. Brunner made a tremendous run through the tournament before facing off against Alveno Matthews, the nationally ranked No. 6 heavyweight. Brunner wrestled well and took the match into overtime, but ultimately fell by sudden victory.
The Knights will return to action on Friday, Nov. 16., as they will face off against Washington and Lee University. The match is scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m. and will be held in the Stoddard Center.
