PHILIPPI, W.V. — The Southern Virginia University wrestling team competed in the second annual "Hams & Slams" match, hosted by Alderson Broaddus, losing 42-11.
The Knights fell short in the first six weight classes against the Battlers, falling behind 31-0.
In the 174-pound weight class, junior Keaton Gomez pinned his opponent, Josh Dailey, in three minutes and 44 seconds, giving the Knights their first points of the match still trailing 31-6.
The Battlers went on to win the next two weight classes leading now, 42-6.
The last matchup of the day was the 285-pound weight class. Sophomore Nico Ramirez would go on to win on a tech fall 22-5 but the Battlers lead was insurmountable, giving Southern Virginia the 42-11 loss.
The match is unique due to the match being outdoors at the Multi-Sport Performance Stadium.
The wrestling team competes next this Saturday, Nov. 3 at the Ned McGinley Invitational at King's College at 9:00 a.m.
