BUENA VISTA, Va. – The Southern Virginia University wrestling won big at Southeast Wrestling Conference Tournament with Zachary Davidson and Gordon Whitaker winning their respective weight classes, and Keaton Gomez and Nico Ramirez placing third.
Davidson kicked things off in the 157-pound weight class, earning a pin against Russell Miller from University of the Ozarks. Following his first-round quarterfinal victory, he won by a 6-5 decision against Caleb Corbett from Hampden-Sydney. In the final bout, Davidson took the title over Kaleb Fontenot (Huntington College) with a 23-7 tech fall.
At 184 pounds, Gordon Whitaker received a bye in the quarterfinals, and defeated Whitaker Alejandro Ordonez (University of the Ozarks) by injury default. Whitaker faced off against Cody Dixon from Huntington College in the championship round, ultimately defeating his opponent by a 9-7 decision.
Keaton Gomez finished in the top three after being knocked to the consolation bracket after a 6-3 semifinal loss to Greensboro's Tyron Dudley. Gomez did win the quarterfinal match 18-0 over Averett's Chris Phelps, and shut out his next opponent, Corbin Ryder (Averett) in the consolation semis (16-0). In the third-place match, Gomez won by fall over Ferrum's Mark Allen.
Taking third in the 285-pound weight class for the Knights was Nico Ramirez. Ramirez defeated his first opponent, Mykel Williams (Greensboro College), with a pin before losing a close decision 7-5 in his second bout against Alveno Matthews (Ferrum College). Ramirez was unfazed by his loss and took it to his next two opponents, pinning both Tryique Nolen (Ferrum College) and Dia Grey (Averett University) to take home third.
The Knights will compete in their final tournament of the season on Friday, February 23 at the NCAA East Regional Tournament.
