Whitaker and Ramirez Earn Pins in Setback at Ohio Valley

VIENNA W.Va. – The Southern Virginia University wrestling team was defeated 25-18 Saturday afternoon, in a close duel with Ohio Valley University.

The Knights trailed early from losses in the 125 and 141-pound weight classes. At 149 Southern Virginia earned six points form an OVU forfeit, before giving up a combined 15 points in the 157, 165, and 174-pound weight classes.

Determined not to be undone, the Knights sent out Gordon Whitaker to face off in the 184-pound weight class against Zack Willard. Whitaker broke Ohio Valley's streak with a quick pin in the first period of action.

The Knights faced yet another setback as they lost the 197-pound weight class by decision 7-2.

Although the duel was decided, Nico Ramirez gave the Knights the last six points of the dual, taking down Ben Willard in 4:26.

The Knights will face off in their final tournament before the NCAA regional tournament at the Southeast Wrestling Conference Tournament in Greensboro, N.C. on Saturday, February 10.
