COLLEGETOWN, Pa. – With a score of 47.5 and a third-place finish in the 285-pound weight class, the Southern Virginia University wrestling team took seventh place out of the thirteen teams that competed at the Will Abele Invitational.
Jayson Cody was the first Knight to make a run at the tournament. Cody was able to earn a pin (5:29) in the round of sixteen before being pinned (4:17) by his quarterfinal opponent. Cody was then placed in a bracket to fight for third but lost by major decision, 12-4, for a fourth-place finish.
In the 149-pound weight class, Christopher Fletcher also made a quarterfinal appearance after quickly pinning his first opponent (0:34). Fletcher then lost by decision in a closely contested quarterfinal, 3-2.
After falling in his first-round bout, Keaton Gomez took it to his next two opponents, winning first by a technical fall 16-0 and then by decision 11-6. Gomez was then defeated by major decision 15-2.
In the 285-pound weight class, Nico Ramirez and Alex Brunner stood out. Ramirez defeated his first opponent by decision 6-4 and pinned his next opponent in 2:59. Despite falling in the next round, Ramirez rolled in the consolation bracket and secured third place for the Knights. Brunner also defeated his first two opponents before falling in the quarterfinals.
The Knights will compete in Greensboro on Tuesday, January 16 at 7 p.m.
