BUENA VISTA, Va. – With a large roster and high spirits, the Southern Virginia University wrestling team is poised to make a big impact during the 2017-18 season.
This season, the Knights are welcoming 14 new wrestlers to their roster. Returning from the 2016-17 team are Mitchell Barney, Alexander Brunner, Christopher Fletcher, Keaton Gomez, Matthew Rohrdanz, and Matthew Speelman.
Head coach Logan Davis is optimistic about his new team. "We are in a good spot with a group of athletes who have been working incredibly hard," Davis said. "There are several teammates who have been stepping up as leaders of the team."
Despite posting a 1-21 record during the 2016-17 season, the Knights have improved dramatically over the past two years. During the 2015-16 season, the Knights recorded 20 pins and 35 individual wins compared to 52 pins and 146 individual wins during the 2016-17 season. The team is looking to make similar improvements during its 2017 season.
"The most important thing for me is the attitude that my athletes have," commented Davis. "It is important that everyone is committed to improving every single day."
The Knights will compete in their first tournament on Saturday, Oct. 4 in Virginia Beach, Va.
