LYNCHBURG, Va.—The Southern Virginia University men's wrestling team placed seventh at the 2012 NCWA Mid-Atlantic Conference Championships this past weekend with two Knights—sophomore Sean Porter and freshman Andrew Evans qualifying for next weekend's national tournament in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Porter (Kaysville, Utah) was Southern Virginia's top qualifier at the conference tournament going 4-0 (10-0, 7-5, 3-1, 7-0) on route to the 149-lb. title.
After dominating his opening-round match 10-0, Porter had his toughest test of the day in his second-round matchup pulling out a 7-5 victory and advancing to the bracket quarterfinals.
Following another tough-fought two-point victory (3-1) in the quarterfinals, Porter cruised to a 7-0 shutout win in the championship bout earning a No. 3 seed at the upcoming national tournament.
"Sean has been our most consistent wrestler all season long and if he can heal up, he'll have a great chance at nationals," said fifth-year head coach Nate Casperson.
Evans (Gahanna, Ohio) placed sixth for the Knights in the 141-lb bracket after winning his first two matches (Fall-4:46, 10-8) before dropping his next three and earning a wildcard bid to nationals.
The NCWA National Championships will take place in Daytona Beach, Fla. from Mar. 8-10.
