DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.—Sophomore Sean Porter won both of his matches on Thursday at the NCWA National Championships in Daytona Beach, Fla. and advanced to the quarterfinals of the 149-lb. bracket.
Porter (Kaysville, Utah) entered the tournament as a No. 3 seed after winning the 149-lb. title at the Mid-Atlantic Conference Championships in Lynchburg, Va., last weekend and earned a 5-0 victory over his opening-round opponent, Ben Pfotenhauer, from Colorado State University.
In the next round, Porter defeated Derrick Pousson of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville 5-1 despite a severely blackened eye suffered in his opening round victory.
With his two victories, Porter advanced to Friday afternoon's quarterfinals where he will face Jonathan Clemente from United States Naval Academy Prep.
Porter is two wins away from becoming Southern Virginia's first national champion wrestler since Peter Rose won three straight titles from 2008-10.
Freshman Andrew Evans (Gahanna, Ohio) also represented Southern Virginia wrestling at nationals as a wildcard in the 141-lb. bracket.
Evans was pinned 2:12 into his opening match against Jacob Janes from Lindenwood University-St. Charles, but recovered to pin his next two opponents in 1:10 and 1:16 respectively.
With an opportunity to still place as high as third, Evans will open tomorrow against Marion Military Institute's Evan Burchette.
