NEWPORT NEWS, Va.—The Southern Virginia University men's wrestling team finished seventh out of 12 teams at the 2012 Builder Invitational on Saturday highlighted by sophomore Sean Porter winning the 149-lb. bracket.
Porter (Kaysville, Utah) swept through the 149-lb. competition on Saturday earning pins in his each of his first two bouts followed by a 4-0 victory in the bracket semifinals. The championship match proved to be a greater test for Porter, who eventually prevailed over Marion Military Institute's William Burns with a final score of 5-4.
Joshua Hall (Pocatello, Idaho) also had a strong showing for the Knights placing third overall in the 133-lb. bracket. After falling in his first match of the tournament to the eventual weight-class champion, Mike Figueroa (MMI), Hall responded with an 8-0 victory in the consolation semifinals followed by a 12-5 decision in the consolation bracket championship.
Andrew Evans (Gahanna, Ohio) was Southern Virginia's next highest finisher as the freshman placed fifth overall in the 141-lb. bracket.
Marion Military Institute won the event with 144 points, followed by host-school Apprentice (135.5), University of Maryland Baltimore County (130.5), University of Scranton (90.5) and University of South Carolina (70.5) rounding out the top five.
Next up for wresting is the 2012 National Collegiate Wrestling Association's National Duals on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 27-28 in Dalton, Georgia.
