BUENA VISTA, Va.—Josh Wallace today was named the United States Collegiate Athletic Association's Wrestler of the Week after winning the 235-lb. bracket at the 3rd Annual Turkey Bowl Classic last Saturday.
Wrestling in his first match of the year just two weeks following his final game as a linebacker on Southern Virginia's football team, Wallace began his day with a thrilling comeback victory in the 235-lb. semi-finals against Daniel Grastly from Eastern Tennessee State University.
Trailing Grastly by one point (0-1) with less than a minute remaining in the match, Wallace tied the score by escaping Grastly's hold with only 43 seconds left in the third period. With the match still knotted at 1-1 and 14 ticks left on the clock, Wallace executed a 2-point takedown securing a last second win (3-2) and a spot in the bracket championship.
In the championship, Wallace faced off against Grastly for the second time of the day, this time winning by pin 43 seconds into the match's second period.
Wallace, now 2-0 on the season, will wrestle again for the Knights on Wednesday, Dec. 7 during Southern Virginia's dual match at Washington and Lee University starting at 7 p.m. EDT.
