LEXINGTON, Va.—Participating in its first meet of the 2011-12 season, the Southern Virginia University wrestling team made a strong showing at the 2011 Rat Rumble Open on Saturday, hosted by NCAA Division I Virginia Military Institute.
This year's Rat Rumble featured steep competition, including three NCAA Division I teams—host VMI, Davidson College and Campbell University—one NCAA Division III school—Washington and Lee University—and two teams from the NCWA Mid-Atlantic Conference—The Apprentice School and Southern Virginia.
Sophomore Jeremy Atkinson (Yuba City, Calif.) was Southern Virginia's top finisher on the day placing second in the 157-lb. bracket after going 1-1. Following a first-round bye, Atkinson cruised through the semi-finals, pinning W&L's Dan Igel in 1:16 before eventually falling in the bracket champsionship to C.T. Talevi from Davidson, 14-5.
Sophomore Joshua Hall (Pocatello, Idaho) also wrestled well for the Knights going 2-1 for a third-place finish in the 133-lb. bracket. Hall defeated Hunter Carroll from Campbell 5-2 in his opening match, but then fell to Davidson's Ben Hartshorn 12-2 in the quarterfinals. In the consolation match, Hall again defeated Carroll, this time winning 5-0.
Competing in the 141-lb. bracket, sophomore Sean Porter (Kaysville, Utah) lost his opening match of the day, but responded by pinning Campbell's Tony Donati 2:30 into his second match before dropping his third match finishing the meet at 1-2.
Freshman Caleb West (St. Albans, W.Va.) went 0-2 in the 197-lb. bracket during his first collegiate meet.
