DUBOIS, Pa. - Freshman wrestler, Jeremy Atkinson took a first place in the 149-lb. bracket, as the Southern Virginia University wrestling team competed in the USCAA National Invitational. Atkinson recorded a first place finish for the Knights for the first time in the 2011 year. Atkinson won both matches of his round robin bracket, and helped the team to one of the best showings in the season.
Atkinson first faced off against Bob Burns of Penn College, and recorded a 5-4 win. The next match featured Mark Irwin of Penn St. -New Kensington, and Atkinson made quick work of his opponent as he pinned Irwin to claim the first USCAA National Invitational for the Knights.
Fellow freshman, Travis Trahan, also competed at the invitational and took home a third place in the 141-lb weight class. Trahan had a hard match to start the day, as he faced off again against Odis Wesby of Apprentice. Wesby has had the better of Trahan throughout the season, and this match unfortunately proved no different for Trahan, as he fell 15-7. Trahan rebounded well, as he scored a 5-0 decision over Garrett Zarecky of Penn St. -DuBois.
Freshman, Taylo Savio, had a rough afternoon, as he could not find a win in the 197-lb. class. Savio's first match saw him fall to William Crawford of Apprentice. His second match did not fare better, as he was pinned by unattached wrestler, Chaz Sheaffer.
The Knights wrestling team will look to continue its fine form when the team hosts the NCWA Mid-Atlantic Conference Tournament. The tournament will take place Feb. 26 in Buena Vista, Va. SVU will be hosting the tournament for the third straight year, and all matches will take place in Knight Arena, with wrestling starting at 9:00 am.
