MACON, Ga. - In day 2 of the NCWA National Tournament, the Southern Virginia University wrestlers found little luck, and bowed out of the tournament. Freshman, Taylor Savio, had the best tournament for Southern Virginia, as he deep in to the consolation bracket at 197-lbs. Savio earned a victory for SVU when he defeated Scott Robbins of Michigan. The match was a close contest, as Savio recorded enough points to get a 9-6 win.
The following match would prove easier for Savio, as he scored a pin of Karl Fong from the University of North Florida at the 1:55 mark of the first period. It looked as if momentum was with Savio heading in to a match against Blake Schoeniger from Northwest Missouri State. Unfortunately for Savio, Schoeniger was able to gain advantage in the first period, and eventually scored a pin. With a 2-2 record at the tournament, Savio finishes his season at 14-7, including the Southern Virginia Turkey bowel win in December.
Travis Trahan and Jeremy Atkinson made early exits from the consolation bracket after first round losses. Both wrestlers faced off against opponents from Oakland University. Atkinson faced off against Austin Sanchez in his match. The match was hotly contested, but Sanchez got the upper hand in the first minute of the third period, and recorded the pin. With the loss, Atkinson finishes his season at 10-6. One of the wins for Atkinson includes the USCAA Invitational Championship.
Trahan found himself in a tough spot for his match against Cody O'Keefe from Oakland. O'Keefe quickly wrested control from Trahan, and never let the freshman have a chance, winning with a score of 14-4. The loss for Trahan finishes his season at 9-6. Trahan also has a Turkey Bowl win, and was the highest finisher for the Knights at the Mid-Atlantic Conference Tournament.
