Wrestlers Struggle In First Day At Nationals

MACON, Ga. - The trio of Southern Virginia University wrestlers representing the team at the NCWA National tournament faced challenging opening round matches at the national tournament, and were unable to find wins for the Knights.

Travis Trahan, wrestling in the 141-lb weight class was able to be well-rested for his first match, as his opponent, Michael Giergio from Marion Military Academy, had to wrestle in a pre-round match just to be in the first round. Trahan had the advantage of rest in facing Giergio, but it did not seem to matter, as Trahan faced a quick pin. The freshman will now move in to the consolation bracket with hopes of moving to the third place match at the end of the tournament. He will face off against Cody O'Keefe from Oakland University.

Trahan's fate would be shared by Jeremy Atkinson, as well. Atkinson, wrestling at 147-lbs., faced Trevor Bailey, also from Marion Military, in his first round match. Atkinson could not find the right angle of attack, and was ultimately pinned by Bailey at the 2:51 mark of the first period. This means a trip for Atkinson to the consolation bracket, like Trahan, where he will face off against Austin Sanchez, who is also from Oakland University.

Representing SVU in the 197-lb. weight class, Taylor Savio was hoping to avoid the first round loss like his teammates, but could not find the winning formula against Nathan Behrent of Florida Gulf Coast University. Savio was able to avoid the pin, as his match was a close affair, but the freshman ultimately could not garner enough points for the win, falling, 9-12. Savio will look to rebound in the consolation bracket when he faces off against Scott Robbins of the University of Michigan.
