BUENA VISTA, Va. - Freshman wrestler, Travis Trahan, made it to the championship match in the 141-lb weight class, before falling in the second period, but earned a trip to the NCWA National Tournament with the second place finish. Trahan fell to Brian Samuels, from University of Maryland- Baltimore County, who was the number one seed in the bracket.
On the way to the final, Trahan had defeated Odis Wesby from The Apprentice School who had been the number two seed. Trahan had had difficulty with Wesby earlier in the season at other tournaments, but found the winning formula when it counted. Trahan had defeated Cagg Cabel of Middle Tennessee State in the second round after receiving a first round bye.
Trahan will be joined at the national tournament by Taylor Savio. Savio, wrestling in the 197-lb weight class, suffered a first round loss to eventual champion, Alec Pence of UMBC, but rebounded to score a win in the consolation bracket against William Windsor of William & Mary.
Savio would lose his next match to Brett Buckner of Radford. Facing a do-or-die situation, Savio won when it counted, forcing a pin of Stuart Roes from Apprentice to get the fifth place finish, and the final national tournament spot in the weight class.
Jeremy Atkinson rounded out the wrestlers for the Knights, and also gave SVU the hat-trick of national qualifiers. Atkinson recorded a second round win over Eric Albrecht of W&M before suffering a semi-final loss to Tyler Hutchens of VMI-Club. Atkinson would suffer consolation round losses to Apprentice's Kyle Spruill and Virginia Tech's Jonathan Carpenter. Atkinson will attend the tournament as a wild card for the 149-lb weight class.
The trio will attend the NCWA national Tournament in Macon, GA. The tournament begins Mar. 10.
