BUENA VISTA, Va. - The Southern Virginia University wrestling team hosted the second annual Turkey Bowl, and had two wrestlers come away with meet champions. The meet started in the 2009 season, as head coach, Nate Casperson, looked for a way to have an early season meet, which would allow for the SVU community to support the wrestling team. This year's meet included teams from Virginia Military Institute, VMI Club, Radford, Virginia Tech, and several unaffiliated wrestlers.
Both Taylor Savio and Travis Trahan went 3-0 in their weight bracket, and were crowned champions in the 197-lb and 141-lb bracket respectively. Jeremy Atkinson had a strong outing on the day, as he went 2-1 on the day, and just missed out on adding another championship bowl to the team's tally.
The open meet format meant no team scoring for the day, with no team being declared an official meet winner.
SVU will return to action Dec. 8 when the team travels the short distance to Lexington, Va. to take on Washington & Lee in a dual format. Wrestling is set to begin at 7:00 pm. complete SVU wrestler results from the Turkey bowl are provided below.
