GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Southern Virginia University women's lacrosse team opened the regular season on Thursday afternoon, falling short to Guilford College 17-12.
The Quakers (1-0) started the game scoring the first four goals. The Knights (0-1) recorded their first point of the season on a Hannah King goal from Chloe Mitchell. Guilford College added seven more goals to the Knights four to end the half leading 12-5.
In the second half, the Knights outscored the Quakers 7-5 but the first half lead did not allow Southern Virginia to get back into the game falling 17-12.
Natalie Rice led the Knights with four goals, all coming in the second half. Hannah King recorded three goals and an assist while Jordan Gunderson scored a pair of goals and an assist. Lauren Thatcher led the Knights in assists with two. Megan Barfuss, Thatcher and Caitriona Knowles each added a goal for the Knights.
Mary-Kate Johnson started in goal for the Knights finishing with 15 saves in the loss.
The Knights home-opener will be this Saturday, Feb. 23 against DeSales at 11:00 a.m.
