BUENA VISTA, Va.—The Southern Virginia University women's basketball team defeated York College of Pennsylvania 76-54 at Saturday's senior night. Sophomore Katie Garrish played a major role in the Knight's win, scoring 26 points and grabbing 12 boards.
With the win, the Knights improve to 17-3 on the season and 8-2 in CAC play.
In the first, the Spartans (10-11, 5-5 CAC) jumped out to a 13-6 lead on the Knights with 4:04 left to play in the quarter. Southern Virginia battled back taking a two-point lead into the second quarter and then extending that lead to 11 heading into the half.
The second half was all Knights as they never let their lead drop below double digits, defeating the Spartans 76-54.
Along with Garrish, Senior Alexus Barnes had a solid outing for the Knights with 11 points, six rebounds and seven assists.
"We played a good, all-around game for 40 minutes today," said head coach Adam Wardenburg. "We discussed the last few days what got our team this far this season and we got back to that foundation today. We had great energy from our entire team. We have a big week ahead of us and we need to continue to play great defense and bring energy in order to achieve our goals for the regular season."
Katie McGowan of York College was the high scorer for the Spartans with 21 points on 7-19 shooting.
The Knights look to start up another winning streak as they continue conference play at Christopher Newport University on the 6th of February at 5:30 p.m.
