Knights Win Season-Opener at Salem

SALEM, Va. — The Southern Virginia University women's basketball team beat Salem College on the road Tuesday evening by the score of 71-50.

The Knights (1-0) picked up their first win of the season with a dominant first-half performance. In the first quarter, the Knights claimed an 18-13 lead with five different players scoring.

Southern Virginia closed out the first half with a long run almost the entire second quarter, outscoring the Spirits (0-1) 22-8, taking a 40-21 lead.

In the third and fourth quarters, the Spirits made their best attempt to get back into the game but were unsuccessful against the Knights second unit. The Knights would close out the game with a dozen players scoring.

Sophomore Katie Garrish started right where she left off, leading the team in both points and rebounds. Savanna Christensen and Alexus Barnes each recorded 12 points on the night.

This win marks the first-career win for Head Coach Adam Wardenburg, in his first head coaching position.

The Knights will come home as they face Piedmont College Thursday, Nov. 15 at 7:00 p.m.
