BUENA VISTA, Va. — The Southern Virginia University women's basketball team fell short Thursday night in a non-conference matchup against Piedmont College, losing 78-72.
In the first quarter, the Knights (1-1, 0-0) trailed the Lions 22-18. The Lions (3-0, 0-0) started the game shooting at an impressive 54.5% from the field compared to the Knights 33.3%.
The Lions looked to push their lead going into the half, building an 11-point lead, 46-35. The Lions shot an impressive 69% that was vital to extending the lead.
The second half went to the Knights, who outscored the Lions 37-32. Early on the third the Knights were down as much as 18-points with the score 55-37 with six minutes remaining. The Knights slowly chipped into the lead down to 12 at the end of the third quarter, 59-47.
In the final quarter, the Lions lead varied early on, extending their lead to as much as 17-points. The Knights were down 68-52 with 3:32 remaining in the quarter when the Knights went on a 20-7 run to bring the game within three points at 75-72. The Knights effort would fall short as a few missed shots and turnovers would cause them to foul, eventually giving the Lions the 78-72 victory.
The Lions led the Knights in points in the paint (26-16), points off turnovers (24-19), and bench points (27-23). The Knights would slightly outrebound the Lions (37-35), and led in second chance points (9-7) and assists (18-12).
The Knights key performances came from sophomore Katie Garrish who was one rebound shy of her career-high in rebounds with 17. To go along with her 17 rebounds, Garrish added 16 points on 7-13 shooting, five blocks, and a career-high four steals.
The Knights will now play Friday, Nov. 16 at 5:00 p.m. against Bryn Mawr at the Knight Sports Arena.
