BUENA VISTA, Va. – The Southern Virginia University women's basketball team defeated Frostburg State University 79-59 on Wednesday afternoon, snagging its third conference win and ninth victory overall. The win marks the highest win total the program has achieved since the 2012-13 campaign.
After falling behind by two at the end of the first quarter, the Knights (9-6, 3-6 CAC) stepped up the defensive intensity in the second period, limiting the Bobcats (8-8, 4-5 CAC) to only one field goal and four points in the stanza and taking a 13-point lead into halftime. Southern Virginia's offense was firing on all cylinders after the break, shooting 56.3% from the field on its way to 47 second-half points and the win.
Freshman forward Katie Garrish dominated the paint, scoring 19 points on 8-15 shooting, tracking down 15 rebounds and swatting three shots. Junior Alexus Barnes tallied 10 points, while Abby Olsen, Shelby Butler, and Nicole Muse each finished with nine.
The Knights defense was stellar both in the full-court forcing 20 Bobcat turnovers, and in the half-court holding Frostburg to a dismal 24.6% shooting from the field. Despite turning it over 25 times themselves, the Knights put up big numbers on offense by shooting 47% from the field, including 43.8% (7-16) from three-point range.
Guard Victoria Diggs led Frostburg State, knocking down four treys on her way to 19 points, seven rebounds, and four assists.
Southern Virginia begins its second go-round with CAC opponents on Saturday, traveling to Wesley College to take on the Wolverines. Earlier this season, the Knights beat Wesley 82-75 in Knight Sports Arena. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m. this on Saturday in Dover, Delaware.
