BUENA VISTA, Va. — A monster game from freshman forward Katie Garrish started the new year off right for the Southern Virginia University women's basketball team; pushing the team past Salem College on Monday afternoon by a score of 97-80. The win was the Knights' third in a row.
The Knights (8-2) jumped out to a 36-10 lead at the end of the first quarter and took a 28-point lead midway through the second quarter. The Spirits (3-6) clawed their way back, however, cutting the lead to four points at 77-73 heading into the fourth quarter. The Knights closed out the game in the fourth quarter with stingy defense, holding the Spirits to a mere seven points in the final quarter for the win.
Garrish posted career-highs in points and rebounds with 26 and 18, respectively, and matched her season-high with five blocks. Also in double-figures for the Knights were forwards Shelby Butler (20) and Alexus Barnes (13) along with guards Bryndie Ballam (11) and Abby Olsen (10). Butler also finished with eight rebounds while Barnes dished out a game-high seven assists.
Southern Virginia as a whole shot the ball well, going 35-76 (46.1%) from the field and 21-27 (77.1%) at the charity stripe.
The Knights return to CAC play on Wednesday evening as they travel east to take on St. Mary's (Md.). Tipoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
