Women’s Basketball Falls to No. 10 Mary Washington

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — The Southern Virginia University women's basketball team lost 69-55 to No. 10 University of Mary Washington in Capital Athletic Conference action Wednesday night.

The Eagles (17-1, 10-1 CAC) took an early 20-16 lead after the first quarter, but the Knights (3-15, 0-11 CAC) outscored their opponent in the second quarter as a layup from Shelby Winsor brought them within one at the break.  

Southern Virginia came out strong in the third quarter and took the lead off of a three-pointer from Cory Stout. The Knights held the lead for the first five minutes of the third before Mary Washington bounced back and controlled The remainder of the game. The Eagles held the Knights to a low 19.4% from the field and only 20 points in the second half.

Merideth Ouellette led the Knights offense with 11 points. Shelby Winsor and Kimberly Eads each contributed 10 points. Winsor also grabbed eight rebounds.

The Knights had a season low 14 turnovers and forced 17 Eagle turnovers.

Southern Virginia returns home to host York College of Pennsylvania on Saturday, January 28. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. in the Knight Sports Arena.
