STAUNTON, Va.—The Southern Virginia women's basketball team earned an impressive 87-55 win over Mary Baldwin University on New Year's Eve.
The Knights (3-7, 0-4 CAC) were led by Jamilla Gambee, Katee Hubert, and Kimberly Eads, all of which recorded career highs. Gambee (Junction City, Ore.) scored 23 points and added four steals and four rebounds. Hubert (Deitrich, Idaho) contributed 17 points and 12 rebounds in her first career start and double-double performance. Eads (Ellicott City, Md.) came off the bench with 15 points, eight rebounds, and five steals.
Southern Virginia took control early in the game after taking a 31-9 lead in the first quarter. The next two quarters were fairly even, but the fourth quarter was dominated once again by the Knights to secure their victory.
Mary Baldwin (1-9) kept Southern Virginia to only one three pointer, but the Knights shot a 43.9% from the field compared to the Fighting Squirrels' 28.6%. Southern Virginia had an impressive 60 points in the paint.
The Knights return home on January 2, 2017 for a non-conference game against William Peace. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the Knight Sports Arena.
