BUENA VISTA, Va.—The Southern Virginia women's basketball team was picked for a ninth-place finish this season, ahead of Frostburg State, and just behind Wesley in the Capital Athletic Conference preseason coaches' poll.
"Our goal this season is to make it to the CAC tournament," head coach Heather Roberts said, "we've been close the last couple of years and need to learn how to win and get over that edge.
"I feel like we have enough returning players and transfers that have come in to help us reach that goal."
Last season Southern Virginia was able to get a pair of conference wins over Frostburg and single-game wins over St. Mary's (Md.) and Penn St.-Harrisburg.
The Knights have a group of key returners from last year, including two of the top three leading scorers, and rebound leader.
Morgan Hartvigsen, Sr., guard, 8.5 ppg, 3.5 rpg
Shelby Winsor, Jr., center, 10.9 ppg, 6.8 rpg
Jamilla Gambee, Jr., wing, 6.4 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 3.0 steals/game
Merideth Ouellette, So., guard, 10.8 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 3.1 assists/game
The Knights open their season on November 16 at Randolph College before heading to Notre Dame University of Maryland for a weekend tournament. They will have their home opener on Tuesday, November 22 at 5 p.m. against Roanoke College.
