Roberts Announces 2014-15 Women’s Basketball Schedule

BUENA VISTA, Va.—Looking forward to her first season at Southern Virginia University, women's basketball head coach Heather Roberts announced the team's 2014-15 schedule Friday afternoon.

Before the Knights compete in their second year of Capital Athletic Conference action, the non-conference slate is highlighted by road trips to Raleigh, North Carolina for the William Peace Tournament and to Brooklyn, New York, to face USCAA opponent St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn.

"We're excited with our schedule and the teams we'll be facing this year," Roberts said. "There isn't a single easy opponent on it. Every team will be a challenge, but we're excited to go out and compete and build a strong program."

Southern Virginia opens the year with a scrimmage against Hollins on Nov. 6 with the regular season starting on Nov. 14 against Averett. The Knights head to the tournament in Raleigh from Nov. 21-22 when they will face Randolph and the winner of Mid-Atlantic Christian and William Peace.

After hosting VU-Lynchburg on Nov. 25, Southern Virginia travels to Brooklyn on Nov. 29 to face the Bears of St. Joseph's College.

"Our non-conference games will be vital to our success in the CAC," Roberts said. "With a new coach, system and players we will need those games to get to know each other and how to play together. We are especially excited about the New York trip to spend time with each other in the city."

League play begins Dec. 1 with an away game at Marymount quickly followed by a trip to Christopher Newport on Dec. 3. Before heading into Christmas break, the Knights host Wesley College on Dec. 6.

CAC action resumes Jan. 3 at home against Salisbury before facing Penn State Harrisburg and St. Mary's on the road.

"Salisbury should be the favorite this year because they return their top eight players, including two of the top players in the league," Roberts said. "Christopher Newport, York, Mary Washington and St. Mary's lost a lot of players from last year but they have solid teams so should rebound nicely.

"The rest of us were young last year, so we should come back stronger with that year of experience under our belt.  All in all, the league will be tough every night."

Southern Virginia closes the league campaign against St. Mary's at Knight Sports Arena on Feb. 21.

Roberts was also excited to announce the addition of a junior varsity squad to the women's basketball program.

"We are excited to have a 10-game JV schedule for this season," she said. "This will provide more opportunities for our scholar-athletes to compete on the basketball court with more games and competition. It will also serve as a developmental piece to our program with more athletes playing and competing so we can draw from a larger pool of athletes."
