Women’s Basketball Defeated by No. 13 York (Pa.)

BUENA VISTA, Va.—Trailing by just six at halftime to the No. 13 team in the country, the Southern Virginia University women's basketball team was overcome by a strong second-half effort by visiting York College (Pa.) to fall by a 77-49 score Saturday afternoon at Knight Sports Arena.

York, now 15-0 for the year and 8-0 in the Capital Athletic Conference, shot 48 percent in the second half after shooting 38 percent in the opening half to finish the game at 43 percent overall. The Knights (2-11) shot 50 percent in the first half going 10-for-20 from the field, but dropped to 20 percent (5-for-24) in the final 20 minutes as the Spartans closed the game with a 40-18 scoring advantage.

The Knights also had 25 turnovers on the afternoon that led to 28 transition points for the Spartans.

Freshman guard Morgan Hartvigsen led the way for the Knights with 13 points on 4-of-9 shooting and went 3-for-5 from beyond the arc toward her tally. The Kaysville, Utah, native also earned three rebounds during the game and had one assist and a steal.

Freshman Paige Crittendon, who finished with eight points, scored two buckets in the game and went 4-for-5 from the charity stripe to go along with a rebound and an assist. Sophomore Shannon Romito finished with seven points, while forward Melynda Boren came off the bench to contribute five points for the Knights.

The Spartans were dominant in the post, outscoring the Knights 20-10 in the paint and had 15 offensive rebounds leading to eight second-chance points. Forward Brittany Hicks led the way with 16 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double, while center Kristen Haley scored 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting.

The Knights quickly return to league action Monday with a 1 p.m. game at Salisbury to make up for a postponed game originally scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 7.
