BUENA VISTA, Va.—The United States Collegiate Athletic Association today announced senior forward Amaris Newkirk (Folsom, N.M.) as the USCAA Division I Women's Basketball Player of the Week due to her performance in last week's contests.
"Amaris has been a great leader for us this season by doing what it takes for our team to succeed and win," said fourteen-year Head Coach Michael Harmon. "She had a great week for us and deserves the recognition."
Newkirk began her torrent stretch on Jan. 22 as she scored a game-high 20 points and grabbed six rebounds, including netting 11 of 12 free throws in the exciting 48-45 home victory over Virginia-Lynchburg.
She followed Tuesday night up with a 22-point, 14-rebound performance on Thursday in Southern Virginia's 76-71 road win at NCAA Division III Randolph College, extending the Knights' winning streak to three games.
Newkirk currently ranks fifth in career rebounds (312) and seventh on the women's basketball all-time career scoring list (428).
