GREENSBORO, N.C.—Behind 16 points and a season-high 15 rebounds from senior Amaris Newkirk (Folsom, N.M.), the Southern Virginia University women's basketball team earned a 68-47 road victory on Saturday at fellow USCAA-foe Bennett College.

"Our defense put the pressure on Bennett [College] and we capitalized on fast break opportunities," said fourteen-year Head Coach Michael Harmon. "It was a good win and we hope to carry over the momentum the rest of the year."

While holding Bennett College (2-11) to 6-for-30 from the field in the first stanza, Southern Virginia (6-5) jumped out to a 15-point lead (29-14) at intermission. Bennett the pulled to within seven points with 11:09 left in the contest before the Knights went on a 27-13 to finish with the 21-point win on the road.

In addition to Newkirk's night, freshman center Crystal Cleveland (Delran, N.J.) registered a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds on the night. Sophomore guard Katie Swenson (Payson, Utah) was the third Southern Virginia double-digit scorer as she registered a season-high 15 points, including going 3-for-8 from beyond the arc.

Senior forward Abigail Logan (Buena Vista, Va.) had a solid night with nine points and four rebounds while junior Ann Kuroki (Hershey, Neb.) finished well all-around, recording eight points, seven assists, six rebounds and five steals in the win.

Bennett guard Shirletta Hacket led all scorers in the contest with 18 points.

"We played with intensity and especially did a good job on the defensive end," said first-year assistant coach Tye Hiatt. "Although we missed some easy looks, our team had an overall solid performance."

The Knights won shot 40.9-percent in the game in comparison to Bennett's 30-percent while also record a team season-high 17 steals and forcing 33 committed turnovers by the home team.

Women's basketball will return home on Jan. 22, to take on its second-straight USCAA-opponent in Virginia University of Lynchburg.
