NEWPORT NEWS, Va.—Behind a balanced offensive effort with four starters scoring in double figures, the Southern Virginia University women's basketball team won its second consecutive game in Saturday's 80-53 defeat over Penn State University-Fayette.

"Today's win capped off a great weekend starting the season with two wins," said fourteen-year Head Coach Michael Harmon. "Our starters did a good job sharing the ball on the offensive end we won the rebound battle."

Great Ships Classic All-Tournament selection senior Mina Romito (Walker, La.) and freshman center Crystal Cleveland (Delran, N.J.) led the way for Southern Virginia (2-0) against USCAA-opponent Penn State-Fayette (0-2) both recording a double-double scoring an identical game-high 18 points and amassing 11 rebounds each respectively.

Romito and Cleveland were complemented by Knights senior Amaris Newkirk (Folsom, N.M.) who also recorded a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 12 rebounds while Abigail Logan (Buena Vista, Va.) added 13 points on 6-for-9 shooting from the field.

Southern Virginia led by only three points (37-34) at halftime despite never losing the lead before the Knights widened the margin over the Lions thanks to a 27-11 run through the first 10-plus minutes of the second half.

The game ended with a strong defensive showing by Southern Virginia as Penn State-Fayette struggled to put the ball in the basket, shooting 26.3-percent in the game—the Knights' second straight opponent to shoot below 30-percent from the field as Bennett finished with a 22-percent shooting percentage on Friday.

Junior Ann Kuroki (Hershey, Neb.) again led Southern Virginia with six assists while adding seven points and eight rebounds in her second straight start at guard. Freshman forward Shannon Romito (Walker, La.) added five points while accumulating eight rebounds in 20 minutes off the bench.

Southern Virginia has won its first two contests of the 2012-13 season—a program feat not accomplished since the 2008-09 squad started 5-0.

Women's basketball has two days off before traveling to NCAA Division I Coastal Carolina University on Saturday, Nov. 20.
