Women’s Basketball Wins Season Opener against Bennett College

Written by Sean Dahlin

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.—The Southern Virginia University women's basketball team opened its season on Friday night with a 74-27 victory over USCAA-Bennett College in the Great Ships Classic.

"We limited our turnovers and played solid defense tonight," said fourteen-year Head Coach Michael Harmon. "Everybody made positive contributions on both ends of the court."

Southern Virginia's (1-0) Sophomore guard Larissa Conger (Merino, Colo.)—who finished with a game-high 18 points hitting 8-of-14 shots—provided a spark off the bench adding seven first-half points to the Knights' 40-16 halftime lead over Bennett (0-3).

After jumping out to an early 12-0 lead within the first six minutes of the game, Southern Virginia (1-0) finished the half on an 11-2 run in the final 5:35 before intermission.

The second half turned out similar to the first stanza as the Knights outscored their opponent 34-9 with Bennett shooting an overall 22% as a team from the field while committing 45 turnovers on the night compared to Southern Virginia's 17 giveaways.

Aside from Conger's performance, three other Knights reached double-figures as third-year senior forward Mina Romito (Walker, La.) added a double-double with 15 points and 10 steals while fellow-senior Abigail Logan (Buena Vista, Va.) and freshman center Crystal Cleveland (Delran, N.J.) chipped in with 10 points apiece with eight and six rebounds respectively for the win.

Junior transfer Ann Kuroki (Hershey, Neb.) contributed in her first contest with Southern Virginia as she recorded a team-leading 11 steals, eight rebounds and eight assists along with scoring six points.

The Knights offense connected on 31 of their 65 shots for a 47.7% team field goal percentage.

"It's always great to win the first game of the season," said Harmon. "But, we need to now turn our focus to tomorrow's opponent."

After winning the season opener, women's basketball closes the Great Ships Classic facing Penn State-Fayette on Saturday, Nov. 17 at 1 p.m.
