BUENA VISTA, Va.—Southern Virginia University senior Nicole Baker (Burley, Idaho) today was named to the 2011-12 VaSID College Division Women's Basketball All-State Second Team as voted on by the association of Virginia Sports Information Directors.

With the selection, Baker becomes only the second Southern Virginia women's basketball player in the program's 14-year history to earn VaSID All-State honors—Lynette Adams-Shroeder was also selected to the second team in 2007-08.

"Today's recognition adds another well-deserved accolade to one of the most accomplished individual seasons in our program's history," said thirteen-year Head Coach Mike Harmon.

Before today's VaSID All-State Second Team selection, Baker had already garnered USCAA All-America, Academic All-America and All-Tournament honors after leading the Knights in several statistical categories during the 2011-12 season, including scoring average (17.4 ppg), rebounding (9.3 rpg) and field goal percentage (58.6 percent).

"Nicole is very deserving of this honor," said Coach Harmon. "She was always willing to do exactly what we needed her to do and play how we needed her to play. That's a pretty rare quality that only a few special players poses."

Eleven games into her senior season, Baker was averaging 10.0 points per game when Coach Harmon asked her to carry more of the team's scoring load. The senior captain responded by averaging a double-double—23.7 points and 10.0 rebounds per game—over Southern Virginia's final 13 games as the Knights went 9-4 during that same stretch.

Five individuals recognized by the 2011-12 VaSID Women's Basketball All-State (College Division) selections, including the Coach of the Year—Deanna Applebury of the University of Mary Washington—and  Player of the Year—Kaithlyn Fischer of Marymount University—hail from the Capital Athletic Conference, which is the NCAA Division III athletic conference that Southern Virginia will join on July 1, 2013.
