SPARTANBURG, S.C.—The Southern Virginia University women's basketball team suffered its second loss of the season Tuesday afternoon falling at NCAA Division I Wofford College 51-87.
Southern Virginia (5-2) came into Tuesday's game at Wofford (5-0) with a four-game winning streak, while averaging a program-record 94.8 points per game, but the Knights managed only 51 points on 29.7 percent shooting (22-of-72) against the undefeated Terriers.
Junior swingman Amaris Newkirk (Folsom, N.M.) continued her strong play of late at Wofford leading the Knights in both points (14) and rebounds (9).
Southern Virginia's only two losses this season have come at the hands of D-I opponents—the Knights' first loss came on Nov. 11 at Coastal Carolina.
Women's basketball travels to Salisbury, Maryland this weekend for back-to-back games against NCAA Division III competition at the 2011 Optimist Classic hosted by Salisbury University.
The Knights will open the classic on Friday, Dec. 2 against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (2-2) at 4 p.m. EDT.
On Saturday, Southern Virginia will face tournament host Salisbury (1-2) at 1 p.m. EDT.
