MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tn. - The Southern Virginia University women's basketball team was hoping for a split in the season series with Milligan, but the hosts jumped on the Knights, 81-55, to go 2-0 in the 2010 season. The Knights were led by Nicole Tolman and Cara Joyner, who combined for 22-points and 10-rebounds.
SVU was hoping to get a lead on the Buffaoles, but Milligan jumped out first, and took a double-digit lead in to the break, as they led 34-26. The Knights were shooting 60% from the field in the first half on 12-for-20 shooting, but the hosts were pushing the pace, and had recorded 36-shots by the end of the first period. The shot disparity showed on the board, as Milligan effectively used the 12-point lead to distance themselves from the Knights in the second half.
The Knights were finding second chance points few and far between, and also could not get possession after shots, with the Buffaloes pulling down 33-rebounds to the visitors' 23. SVU also found difficulties in keeping the ball, as the Buffaloes forced the team into 21-turnovers.
Amanda Morgan had a solid game off the bench, as she chipped in 9-points and three rebounds. Milligan used the 12-point cushion in the second half to push past the Knights, and gave them the second win of the season over the Knights, after a home-opening loss in the beginning of the month. SVU finished the night shooting 43% from the field in comparison to Milligan's 53% shooting. The Knights had few rips to the free-throw line, but were able to shoot 66% once they got to the stripe.
The bench for the Knights again contribute a solid night, as the second team tapped in 30-points to Milligan's 38-points from the bench. The loss pushes the Knights back to 3-7 on the season. The team will look for a win Dec. 3 when it travels to play at Salisbury. Tipoff for the game is set at 6:00 pm.
