Knights Go 2-0 At Great Ships Classic

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - A tight game broke the way of the Southern Virginia University women's basketball team, as they scored a 78-67 win over Briarcliffe to go 2-0 at the Great Ships Classic. Behind a game high 20-points from Nicole Tolman, the Knights recorded the second win of the season, and are now on a streak with the 2-0 weekend at the classic hosted by the Apprentice School. Tolman also pulled down 15-rebouns to give her a double-double on the night, and also pushed her to a spot on the all-tournament team.

SVU found itself in a small hole at 0-5 at the beginning of the game, but started a scoring run of 13-3 over the next 5-minutes to get a lead, only to see BC come back for a lead two minute later. Along with Tolman, Ajalynn Domingo was finding success in the scoring department, as she went 5-for-8 from the field, and 2-for-4 from three-point range. Domingo helped push the knights back in to a lead at 30-28, and it would be a lead that the knights would not give up for the rest of the game.

SVU took a 46-33 lead in to the half, and then jumped on top of BC with a 13-4 which saw the Knights take the largest lead of the game at 59-37. Briarcliffe staged a small comeback to get within 11-points, but SVU went on another run late in the game to get up to a 19-point lead before running the clock down for the final 11-point margin.

Domingo added 9-assists to the team, missing by 1-assist another double-double for the Knights. Jenna Aldridge added 8-points to the cause. Domingo, Cara Joyner and Amanda Morgan each contributed 6-rebounds, as the Knights again out-rebounded by a large margin the opponent, totaling 50 to Briarcliffe's 25.

The Knights again had a strong shooting game, as they went 27-for-56, and 9-for-17 from three point range. SVU was able to make 19-trips to the free throw line, and missed only four, for an average of 78% for the game.

The win moves the Knights to 2-4 on the young season. Another strong challenge faces the Knights as they travel to play NCAA D.I foe Wofford, Nov. 22. Tipoff for the game is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
