Buzzer Beater Leads SVU To Come From Behind Win Over WAU

BUENA VISTA, Va. An Ashley Baird put-back with 3-seconds left on the clock gave the Southern Virginia Women's Basketball team a one-point lead, and eventually a win over WAU 52-51. Baird's put-back came after she pulled down an offensive rebound from a Jessica Anderson free-throw. Anderson had made a trip to the free-throw line after stealing the ball from the Shock players with 6-seconds left, and was fouled in the process. Her first free throw went in to get the Knights to within one point at 50-51.

"We showed a lot of energy and passion tonight," said Head Coach Mike Harmon. "We needed those traits tonight to come back, especially in that last minute-and-a-half. I'm very proud of the team."

It did not look to be the Knights' night as they trailed by nine points with less than seven minutes to play in the second half. WAU foul trouble early on allowed SVU to make several trips to the line, and the Knights chipped away at the lead to eventually get close several times. However, The Shock was able to maintain the lead until the very end when the Knights treated the home crowd to some magic.

Lost in the heroics of Baird and Anderson was the fact that Ashley Thackeray had a dominant night for SVU as she put in 17-points and pulled down 6-rebounds. Thackeray was 7-for-9 from the field and 3-for-4 and helped the Knights stay close to the visitors all game. Carly Skinner helped the Knights in the low post as she pulled down a team-leading 9-rebounds.

Baird, Thackeray and Jasmin Johnson all had double-digit points with Baird putting in 10-points (on 6-for-6 shooting from the free throw line), and Johnson also chipping in 10-points.

SVU was able to shoot 17-for-49 from the field. The Knights struggled with both free-throw shooting, as they went 17-for-30 from the line, and with turnovers as they coughed up the ball 22-times. The Knights were strong on the boards, pulling down 41 to the Shock's 35.The Shock was led by Erin Duffie's 24-points.

SVU is now 7-13 on the season. The Knights are scheduled to return to action Feb. 6 when they host Bennett College. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
