Strong Second Half Not Enough As Knights Fall To UVA-Wise

BUENA VISTA, Va. A 16-5 run to start the second half paced the Southern Virginia Women's Basketball team, but was not enough as they fell to visiting UVA- Wise 70-57. The kights were led in scoring by Kara Hiatt who put in 16-points while dishing out 2-assists and collecting3-steals. SVU could not take advantage of the strong second half display due to a large lead for the Highland Cavaliers heading into the break. The 42-22 lead for the hosts was enough of a buffer to overcome the streaking Knights in the second term.

"We came out too flat in that first half," said Head Coach Mike Harmon. "We just dug ourselves too big of a hole, and couldn't get out and get back in the game. Despite that, I'm really happy with our second half performance. We played with a passion and a fire. This young team grew up a lot in that second half. I'm proud of them."

SVU outscored the visitors 35-28 in the second half, and had several opportunities to close the double-digit lead for the Highland Cavaliers to a single-digit margin. But every time the Knights got close UVA- Wise was able to respond with a big play to up the lead again.

SVU had another strong showing on the glass with 35-rebounds, but fell short to UVA- Wise who pulled down 41. Both teams went with aggressive presses throughout the game and the turnovers for both teams showed as SVU coughed up the ball twenty-six times, and UVA-Wise lost possession twenty-two times.

SVU took the lead in bench scoring as the second team put in 17-points for the night. The Knights went 20-55 from the field and 2-11 from three-point range. The hosts were a force from the free-throw line as they went 15-20 from the stripe.

Southern Virginia falls to 4-9 on the season. The Knights return to action Jan. 16 when they travel to play at Bennett. This is a change from the schedule as the Knights were scheduled to host Bennett first. The rematch for the teams will be Feb. 6 and SVU will host.
