BARBOURVILLE, Ky. The Southern Virginia Women's Basketball team could not stop a strong first half from hosts Union, and eventually lost 83-53. The Knights fell behind early as they went in to the locker at half behind 46-20. The Knights were only able to shoot 7-for-16 from the field, and had only one three-point attempt in the first half. SVU was only able to get to the free-throw line thirteen times, and converted on six of those opportunities.
"Union is a team that is in the top-35 of the NAIA," said Head Coach Mike Harmon. "They have a deep squad, and they have upperclassmen leadership. It was going to be a challenge to start, but we hurt ourselves with inconsistent shooting. We need to find a way to shoot well from beyond the arc."
SVU was unable to hit a shot from behind the three-point arc, while Union went 13-for-36 from three-point range. A high point for the Knights was the strong performance from the team on the glass as the team out-rebounded Union 39-27. Amanda Prestwich was the leading scorer for the Knights with 13-points, and also led the team with 8-rebounds.
SVU shot 51% from the field, and 55% from the free-throw line, but could not keep the turnover bug away as they surrendered the ball to Union 41 times.
The Knights are now 4-6 on the season. They return to action Dec. 12 when they take on Shawnee State University of Ohio. The game will be the second game of the Saturday lineup in the UC Lady Bulldog Baymont Inn Classic. Shawnee State currently sits at 5th place in the NAIA D.II National Rankings. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00.
