EMORY, Va. — The Southern Virginia University softball team fell short in their doubleheader on the road Tuesday night against the Emory & Henry Wasps 9-3 in the first games and 11-3 in the second.
In the first game, the Knights (6-18) trailed 2-0 after the second inning. Southern Virginia scored their first run of the game in the top of the third on a Heather Terranova single scoring Madison Rigby closing in on the Wasps (13-8) lead 2-1.
After scoring two more runs, the Wasps led 4-1 going into the top of the fifth. The Knights scored their final two runs of the ball game in the top of the fifth while the Wasps closed out the Knights with five more runs for the 9-3 victory.
Megan Harmon was on the mound for the Knights allowing six earned runs in the loss.
In game two, both teams were held scoreless in the first two innings. In the bottom of the third, the Wasps scored a pair of runs for a 2-0 lead.
The Knights managed to score two runs on an error and later on a Kemp single scoring Bethanie Hudson to tie the game 2-2.
The Wasps responded with a pair of their own runs to jump back into the lead 4-2.
Southern Virginia scored a run by way of a Caitlin Barber solo home run to bring the Knights within one still trailing 4-3.
Emory and Henry scored seven straight runs combined in the fifth and six innings to put away the Knights 11-3.
Barber, Hudson and Kemp recorded the only hits for the Knights. Kemp was in the circle for the Knights going four innings in the loss.
The Knights open Capital Athletic Conference play this Saturday, Mar. 30 as they will face Christopher Newport at 2:30 and 4:30 p.m.
