Knights Fall in First Game of Mountain Mash Tournament to River Hawks

SALEM, Va. — The Southern Virginia University softball team started the Mountain Mash Tournament Friday afternoon against Susquehanna University, falling 9-3.

The Knights (1-6) fell behind in the first inning allowing four runs on a pair of walks and hits giving the River Hawks(1-0) a 4-0 lead.

Southern Virginia followed with a strong response scoring three runs in the top of the second inning.

Caitlin Barber started the inning for the Knights with a leadoff walk. Krystal Kemp followed up with a single up the middle to put runners on first and second. Melanie Payton put the Knights on the board with an RBI single scoring Barber.

The Knights second run came by way of a throwing error advancing Peyton to third and bringing Kemp home to trim the River Hawks lead to two.

The final run of the inning on a sacrifice bunt scoring Peyton with Southern Virginia now trailing 4-3.

The River Hawks added to their lead in the following innings scoring five more unanswered runs to put away the Knights 9-3.

Megan Harmon and Kemp both pitched for the Knights collecting three strikeouts and allowing eight hits in the loss.

The Knights second game of the day against Lynchburg was cancelled due to weather. 

The Knights continue day two of the Mountain Mash Tournament where they will play two games, starting with Pitt-Bradford at 12:00 p.m. and will play in their final game Wilson College at 4:00 p.m.
