WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The Southern Virginia University softball team went 1-1 Saturday morning defeating Shenandoah University 11-5 and falling to Brandeis 8-0.
In the Shenandoah game, the Hornets (0-1) struck first scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. In the bottom of the first, the Knights (1-2) answered with their own two runs on a Krystal Kemp double.
The Knights third inning produced four runs starting with a Lara double scoring one runner. Only a few batters later Lara stole home to increase the lead 5-2. Heather Terranova would be next up and with a base hit bring two more Knights home extending the lead to 7-2.
The fourth and fifth innings were all the Hornets where they were able to score three runs making the score 7-5.
In the bottom of the sixth, Kemp hit a three-run home run once again increasing the lead. The Knights scored one more run on an error to make the game the final 11-5.
Kemp picked up her first win as a Knight throwing seven innings and recording two strikeouts.
In game two, the Knights (1-3) struggled offensively with just three hits on the game coming from Terranova with two and Megan Harmon the other.
Brandeis University (1-0) did all the damage in the first two innings of play where they scored eight runs.
After the second inning, neither team scored for the remainder of the game, handing the Knights the 8-0 loss.
The Knights play next at Randolph College Saturday, Feb. 23 at 12 and 2 p.m.
