NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Southern Virginia University softball team's three-game win streak ended as it fell to No. 14-ranked Christopher Newport University in a twinbill at Captains Park, 18-0 and 12-0, Saturday afternoon in Newport News, Va.

In game one, the Captains (24-6) brought runs across the plate in each inning of play and had a 10-0 lead through two complete. The Knights scattered three hits on the day with their lone threat coming in the top of fifth as second baseman Maggielou Tafua and shortstop MaKenzie Cox singled up the middle. Both runners would reach second and third before a Katie Evans strikeout ended the opportunity.

Southern Virginia starter Jamie Pinkston took the loss in the decision, giving up 15 runs on 13 hits while walking five and striking out one. Hanah Marshal picked up the win for Christopher Newport, going the distance and giving up only three hits while striking out eight of the 17 batters she faced.

The second game saw the Captains take a 4-0 lead after two innings before their offense ignited in the third. The home team scored eight runs in the bottom half, highlighted by a Christopher Newport three-run homer over the centerfield wall by infielder Tori Clarke. That would be all the offense needed as Captain starting pitcher Krista Lewis gave up only two hits on the day.

Evans and Cheyenne Hegsted picked up the two hits for Southern Virginia (3-16) coming in the first and fourth innings, respectively.

Cassandra Pacheco took the loss in game two, giving up 12 runs on eight hits in three innings of work.

Softball will have just one day off before it hosts fellow NCAA Division III member Mary Baldwin College in a doubleheader Monday, Apr. 7 at Harvey-Dryden Field. The first pitch will take place at 3 pm.
