BUENA VISTA, Va.-The Southern Virginia University softball team dropped both games of its doubleheader against Wesley College, each by scores of 14-1, Saturday evening at Harvey-Dryden Field in Buena Vista, Va.
In game one, the Knights took an early 1-0 lead through two complete innings. Despite Wolverine pitcher Lindsay Siok recording two quick outs in the bottom of the first, Southern Virginia was able to rally behind smart base running and key hits. Chance Hegsted provided a two-out single, then stole second before freshman McKenzie Packard recorded an infield single. A double steal attempt brought home Hegsted to give the Knights the lead; however, this would be the only run Southern Virginia would score.
Neither team would score in the second inning, but the Wolverine bats came alive as they would score in four consecutive innings, highlighted by an eight-run sixth that would seal the game.
Jamie Pinkston (0-4) took the loss for the Knights giving up six runs, 11 hits, and five walks while striking out two in five innings.
Wolverine starter Siok (6-2) earned the victory, giving up one run on three hits while recording three strikeouts in six innings.
In game two, the Knights (0-11) never led as the Wolverines (11-5, 0-2 CAC) jumped out to a 5-1 lead through four innings. Freshman outfielder Reilly Anderson scored the lone run for Southern Virginia in the bottom of the third.. After doubling to left field and advancing to third off a throw, Anderson crossed home plate off a MaKenzie Cox RBI groundout.
The Wesley offense would prove too much for the Knights as it scored nine runs in the top of the fifth that would end the game in five innings.
Wolverine starting pitcher Lily Engel (5-2) took home the win, giving up one run on five hits in five innings of work.
Pinkston took the loss for Southern Virginia giving up twelve runs – only four of which were earned – on nine hits while recording one strikeout in four innings.
Softball is back in action Monday as it hosts fellow CAC member and No. 2 nationally ranked Salisbury University in a doubleheader. Game one is slated to begin at 1 pm.
