BUENA VISTA, Va.—On home-opening day at newly dedicated Harvey-Dryden Field, the Southern Virginia University softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader against visiting NCAA Division III member Wilson College, 13-3 and 9-6.
In game one, the Phoenix led 1-0 after the first before it broke the game open with a six-run second inning during an error-plagued top half for the Knights. Wilson would go on to score two runs in the top of the third and one in the fourth to increase its lead to 10-1 through four complete innings.
Southern Virginia answered with two runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning with Reilly Anderson and Lainie Thompson crossing home plate off a Phoenix error and a Katie Evans RBI single. Wilson College came right back in the top of the sixth with three runs of its own, which proved to be enough to end the game in six innings as the Knights were unable to score in the bottom half of the sixth.
Taylor Crouse (2-0) picked up the victory for Wilson, pitching a complete game while giving up three runs on six hits. Cassandra Pacheco (0-2) took the loss for Southern Virginia.
Game two featured a much closer battle between the two squads. Wilson jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead before a two-out RBI double to left center field by Evans had Southern Virginia up 2-1 through three complete.
The Phoenix was quick to respond scoring six runs in the top half of the fourth as its bats came alive. The Knights came right back in the bottom of the inning with four runs of their own. Cheyenne Hegsted scored off a Wilson throwing error before freshman McKenzie Packard hit a bases-clearing triple to cut the deficit to 7-6.
Southern Virginia could not inch closer as it was held scoreless the rest of the way, while the Phoenix gained two insurance runs in the top of the seventh to seal the victory.
Kyla Sullenberger (1-2) went the distance for Wilson, pitching all seven innings while giving up six runs on five hits. Jamie Pinkston took the loss for Southern Virginia.
The Knights fall to 0-4 on the season while the Phoenix improve to 3-3.
The softball team returns to action at home on Wednesday, Mar. 5 against Davis & Elkins College for another doubleheader. Game times are slotted for 3 pm and 5 pm at Harvey-Dryden Field.
