AKRON, Ohio—The United States Collegiate Athletic Association today announced its 2013 softball All-American and All-Academic selections honoring three members of the Southern Virginia University softball team.
Senior Malia Falevai (Mesa, Ariz.) headlined the Southern Virginia selections as the starting first baseman was named to the USCAA All-American Honorable Mention Team after leading the Knights in batting average (.433), slugging percentage (.687), on-base percentage (.525), doubles (10) and RBIs (19).
"Malia had a great season offensively and defensively for us," said third-year Head Coach Duste Grawrock. "She played like an All-American this year."
In her lone year at Southern Virginia, Falevai also ranked second on the squad in home runs (1) and fielding percentage (.955).
In addition to Falevai, senior pitcher McKenzy Mackay (Kaysville, Utah) and sophomore catcher Sarah Edwards (Phoenix, Ariz.), who were named to the Capital One Academic All-District team nearly two weeks ago, earned 2013 USCAA All-Academic honors as well.
Mackay earned her second straight All-Academic award as she was also a 2012 selection.
"I'm proud of McKenzy and Sarah for being recognized for their success in the classroom," said Grawrock. "They were both team leaders and key components of what we accomplished this year."
